The sun is visible as from five o'clock in the morning to seven o'clock in the evening throughout the summer.

There is less sunlight during the winter season; the sun is usually visible from six o'clock in the morning to six o'clock in the evening.

During the majority of the year, the Northern area of the island benefits from an additional hour of sunlight. During the winter and wet summer months, there is one hour less of sunshine in the Central Plateau and Eastern area.

## Rainfall in Mauritius

Located in the centre of the island, [Grand Bassin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SzH4j8RmD0) is a crater lake, which is surrounded by rich and verdant nature. Its waters abound with fish and eels.

Fringed by whitewashed Hindu temples, it attracts thousands of pilgrims in the month of February each year. The Maha Shivaratri Festival will be held on the 18 February 2023.

Maha Shivaratri, the night of Shiva is a Hindu festival to honour [Lord Shiva](https://www.timesnownews.com/spiritual/religion/article/lord-shiva-and-his-nineteen-avatars-all-you-need-to-know/727337#:~:text=imperfections%20and%20illusions-,Lord%20Shiva%20is%20one%20of%20the%20towering%20deities%20of%20the,Vishnu%20is%20the%20%22protector%22.&text=This%20Hindu%20deity%2C%20in%20a,the%20form%20of%20a%20Linga.), one of the principal deities in Hinduism. Shiva is also believed to be the energy in every living being.

The celebration is preceded by a few days of fasting, thought to detoxify the body and aid meditation. It is interesting to note that fasting in Hinduism is referred to as having a plant-based diet for each meal.

Pilgrims often carrying the Kawars, cross the length and breadth of the island to reach Grand Bassin. For a week or so, the Kawars offer a spectacle of colours dotting the main streets around the island.

Participating in the pilgrimage is a unique experience. One can easily slip into meditation while listening to the chants. A sense of oneness and peace can be felt during the festival.

Volunteers set up tents in their yards or by the roadside and invite the pilgrims for a meal or for tea and some even provide an area to rest. Trays of food and drinks bring people of all faiths together in laughter, joy and spirituality.

## Discover Port Louis the capital of Mauritius

Located 1200 miles from the east coast of the African continent, Mauritius is a Republic consisting of Mauritius Island and Rodrigues Island.

The capital city is Port Louis, which is also the largest city of Mauritius. The lively ethnic quarters of this bustling city display the rich diversity of cultures and traditions that have outlived colonisation.

Port Louis is the main administrative city and it opens on the harbour. It’s the right place to get a real feel of local life: street food, hawkers, the central market, the Champs de Mars horse-racing track (2nd world’s oldest!)… The central market has been renovated but the arches at both entrances have been there since Victorian times.

A few landmarks will take you back in local history. Let’s make it clear: attractions in Port Louis are mostly historical for real history or black history enthusiasts.

A number of monuments lie across Port Louis: Queen Victoria, King Edward V11, Mahe de la Bourdonnais, important figures in the then Mauritius…

Walking down the cobbled sidewalks in Port Louis allows one to see how modern architecture cohabitates with colonial-style buildings. The Fort Adelaide (La Citadelle) which a few publications describe as having a Moorish air, was built in 1840 by the British. It’s one of the best places to visit in Port Louis. The fortress offers a panoramic view of the harbour and the capital city.

Religions lie at the heart of island life in Mauritius and most particularly Port Louis as it is a melting pot of culture and religions. Prominent places of worship like the St. James Cathedral, St. Louis Cathedral, Chapel of Marie Reine de la Paix, Jummah Mosque (the inner courtyard is open to the public from Monday to Thursday except during Ramadan), Kwan Tee Pagoda, Nam Shun Fooy Koon Pagoda, Kaylasson Temple, all located in and around the city centre, allow getting a glimpse of the dimension of traditions present in the local communities.

Who said there was no museum in Mauritius? The Photography Museum is our favourite. It’s a family-run museum with thousands of collectibles around photography and printing, nicely set in a charming building in the city centre. The Postal Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Blue Penny Museum are all located within walking distance from the centre.

We also recommend Aapravasi Ghat, the Immigration Depot, where more than 500 000 indentured labourers landed before being transported to plantations during the British Empire.

## Colonisation to modern days - Mauritius history throughout the years

## Portuguese and Dutch Period

Mauritius has a rich history and is located in a very strategic place along the sea route between Europe and India. It has since then been a stopover for navigators. The Portuguese occupied the island between 1507 and 1513. The first settlement was though established by the Dutch between 1598 and 1710.

They landed and stayed at Mahebourg in the south-east of the island on their way to India for trade because fresh water, fruits and animals such as tortoise, fish and the dodo (now extinct) for food were easily available. They introduced sugarcane plants and manioc from Java. They cut down Ebony trees (now endemic) to sell back to Holland for furniture uses. Dutch colonisation started in 1638 only and ended by 1710 due to unforeseen cyclones and pests like rats and mongoose, destroying their stock of grains.

One can still visit the Frederick Hendrik Museum and the Dutch routes in Grand Port.

## French Colonisation and Development of Mauritius island

By the end of 1710, French navigators had already started visiting the island. They decided to settle down here in 1715. Guillaume Dufresne d’Arsel set up the French colony under the rule of the French East India Company.

He thus named Mauritius as Isle de France and Reunion Island as Ile Bourbon. Fertile soil on Isle de France was exploited while Ile Bourbon was used as a warehouse. With the arrival of Mahe de Labourdonnais in 1735, the island started developing productively into a colony. Slaves were brought from Africa and India, and more Bretons were encouraged to immigrate here to improve the island’s economic condition. French colonizers were allocated a plot of land and several slaves.

During the French colonisation, inhabitants were motivated to grow cash crops and trade with the passers-by. Nutmeg and other spices, along with tobacco and tea, were also introduced. Sugar and Arrack were made out of cane plants. Roads across the island, buildings, houses, churches, schools and dispensaries were built. Port-Louis became the main port as access in and from Mahebourg was often affected by the Southeast Trade Winds.

Later the port developed into a naval base and a shipbuilding centre during the Napoleonic wars. Buildings such as the Government House and the Line Barracks and the Chateau Mon Plaisir at Pamplemousses are some of the masterpieces of French architecture in Mauritius during French colonisation.

## British Colonisation

The spice trade was the main reason for the presence of Europeans in the Indian Ocean during British colonisation. British traders’ business started going down as the French were constantly trading in the Indian Ocean.

The fact that Mauritius island is at a focal point between the east and the west in the Indian Ocean, the British decided to capture the island. The Battle of Grand-Port in December 1810 brought defeat to the French who surrendered to the British which ushered the British colonisation. The possession of the island by the British was legally confirmed by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. The British, however, allowed the French, Creoles and the slaves to stay back. By that time, the island was well-populated and the language mainly used was French and Mauritian Creole (Kreol Morisien which evolved while slaves were trying in vain to learn French).

The British changed the name of the island to its former name, Mauritius and continued developing it in the light of what the French had achieved to date.

## Abolition of Slavery and the Arrival of Indentured Laborers

Slavery was abolished on the island on the 1st of February 1835. Many French settlers returned back to their native country. Indentured Laborers, mainly from India, were brought to the island.

They were first kept in quarantine at the Aapravasi Ghat at Port Louis and then sent to factory sites. They helped into the sugarcane fields and even started girmityas-schools run by the Indians to impart the Hindu religion and Indian culture to youngsters. The Indo-Mauritians kept their ancestral culture alive and their language too. They gathered enough money over the years and sent their children to schools that were hitherto meant for the British only. Chinese merchants immigrated to Mauritius and set up their shops now known as laboutik sinwa. Franco-Mauritians, Indo-Mauritians, ex-slaves Chinese migrants and the British populated the island.

The Mauritians were by that time able to speak/understand Mauritian Kreol which also comprises of Hindi and Bhojpuri words while some educated ones were able to converse in English and French too.

## Mauritius Independence

As Malcolm X said “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”, education brought a new school of thought for freedom among the Mauritians. Around the years the 1930s, political parties were founded by the locals.

The unity among the various ethnic groups helped them fight for their rights. The struggle for Mauritius Independence had started. After 1961, the British agreed to permit additional self-government after an independence campaign. The Legislative Assembly Election in 1967 was won by the coalition of the Mauritian Labor Party, the Muslim Committee of Action and the Independent Forward Block. The Mauritian Social Democratic Party was then in the opposition.

The British rule officially ended on the 12th March 1968. The British Crown Colony of Mauritius became an independent sovereign Commonwealth realm. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was the first prime minister of the country while Sir Veerasamy Ringadoo became the first president of the country after the abolition of the monarchy. The country was recognized as the Republic of Mauritius within the Commonwealth realm on the 12th March 1992. The country has progressed a lot after that. Education has been free through the secondary level since 1976 and through the post-secondary level since 1988.

Free transport for students was introduced in 2005. The sugar industry, textile industry, tea industry and tourism industry has pushed the country’s economy towards flourishing financial stability. Mauritians have adopted a hard-working lifestyle to move up the social ladder. Education is the backbone of society’s strength and security. English is, in fact, the official language of the country; French and Mauritian Creole are widely spoken.

Asian languages such as Bhojpuri and Mandarin are also part of the linguistic mosaic. The country in itself has a rich heritage.

## Mauritian Society

The historical background of Mauritius leads us to a multicultural Mauritian society from the various era of various colonisation. Mauritian people descend from migrants after the various colonisation periods.

Thus, the country is a converging point of global civilizations where one can feel the cosmopolitan aspects of the world. This plural society consists of different ethnic groups namely: Hindu, Muslims, Christians, Chinese and Creole. The stability and racial harmony in the society are unique. Ancestral traditions, rites and rituals have been passed on from generation to generation. Therefore, the Mauritian culture encloses bits and pieces of the Indian, African, Chinese and European cultures.

To complete this puzzle, each distinct culture’s culinary heritage has merged to form the Mauritian culture. The island’s inherent natural and cultural value, historical significance, and natural and man-made beauty make it a unique tourist attraction.

## Multicultural Mauritius (enn sel lepep, enn sel nation)

Mauritians celebrate and respect each other’s beliefs and traditions. They have adopted each other’s culture to build a stronger Mauritian community. Deepavali is not only a Hindu festival nowadays.

It is the celebration of light and sharing, on Eid-Ul-Fitr which is the Muslim New Year, every Mauritian cook the famous Biryani to partake in the festivity. The real Mauritian culture’s foundation is, nevertheless, the history of Mauritius and Mauritians. Le Morne Mountain has been listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Center. It site ends with the slave route monument as many maroon slaves had preferred jumping from the mountain than having to face the punishments of their masters.

There is another monument commemorating the Abolition of Slavery in Mahebourg too. Chronologically, the Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis has been transformed into a museum to commemorate the arrival of the Indentured Labourers in Mauritius. In the same light, the Aventure du Sucre in Pamplemousses exhibits former sugar factory features and sugarcane cultivation.

January, February and March are the months that honour the island’s Asian culture. Sankranti is celebrated intimately on the 14th of January and this event is followed by a number of colourful and festive traditional celebrations, like the Thaipoosam Cavadee, Maha Shivaratri, Chinese New Year, Holi and Ugadi.

The list of public holidays extends to the celebration of the Abolition of Slavery which takes national importance with performances across the island mostly including music concerts.

This year on March 12th, it’s the National Day, and this time, it’s like no other. It will mark the 50th Anniversary of Independence, which reminds us all, of the journey from 1968 to date.

From a country that was mainly reliant on agriculture with widespread poverty to a state island benefitting from world-class facilities (though there remain a number of challenges to be addressed), Mauritius has grown through its diverse economy, striving to shine in the African region.

Christmas, Easter, Assumption is celebrated by most Mauritians as a tradition or religiously. Christmas is one of the most important celebrations which is preceded by a shopping spree with most malls full of activities ranging from Mehendi application to photoshoot with Santa.

Described as the Lourdes of Mauritius by many, the shrine of Pere Laval is visited yearly by thousands of pilgrims, some seeking for a miracle, on the 8th of September each year.

Divali, the festival of lights is our favourite. The festive ambience that locks the country in conviviality for a week or so, is a special one. Vegetarian sweet cakes known as mittai in Hindi, are baked and prepared in most homes and shared with neighbours, friends and relatives.

In the evening, houses and gardens are decorated with diyas, earthen lamps or fairy lights wrapped around palm trees and hanging from rooftops. It’s a magical sight.

You can join anytime for even one session only where you will learn about breathing exercises, different asanas (poses) and how to meditate. They also conduct workshops and silent retreats where you can have a very peaceful time. The centre is located in Curepipe.
