Grand Bassin – Discover the Ganga Talao!
Located in the south of Mauritius, this sacred lake is worshipped by all communities in the country who believe in its divine energies.
This name finds its origin back in India, where we have the most revered and sacred river known as ‘Ganga’. Our Mauritian ancestors had brought water from this river and mixed it in this holy water back here and since then got its name as ‘Ganga Talao’.
You will see a gigantic statue of Lord Shiva, the Hindu God of destruction which is the tallest statue built in Mauritius.
‘Grand Bassin’ is visited by pilgrims from all over the island during the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri which is celebrated worldwide in the name of Lord Shiva and his consort Shakti.
This particular festival is celebrated in the form of pilgrimage here in Mauritius for many years now, especially by the majority of youths.
People start preparing at least a few weeks prior and maintain a fasting period. They consume only vegetarian food and non-alcoholic drinks are strictly forbidden.
A week before the festival, pilgrims leave their house to the sacred lake on foot while chanting and singing praises of Lord Shiva. Most of them also carry ‘kanwars’ on their shoulders.
The entrance is free to visit and has parking and toilet facilities as well. You can combine your visit to Grand Bassin with another attraction at the tea plantation in Bois Cheri.
